Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to run with Akufo Addo

The NPP has named banker and deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Mahamadu Bawumia as vice presidential candidate to Nana Akufo-Addo for the December 7 elections. The decision followed a highly charged meeting of the party's National Executive Committee at the prestigious Alisa Hotel in Accra.  The announcement shocked quite a number of people as Bawumia whose father was also a politician but in the CPP camp is the quiet type not known as a politician.

The naming of Bawumia, 45, who would be formally introduced at the NPP delegates’ congress at Sekondi on Saturday, should put to rest media speculations that have become common place.

Several names have been mentioned including Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs as his choice. Other names that came out recently were Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, President of ECOWAS Commission; Alhaji Adam Zakaria, Principal of the Bagabaga Training College in Tamale; and Alhaji M.N.D Jawula, Former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health.

Bawumia, is currently Chairman of the Capital Market Committee and know to have spearheaded the strategy for accessing the international capital markets with last year’s debut US$ 750mn. He was also responsible for drafting the financial sector component of the Millennium Challenge Account Compact, which yielded US$ 547m for the financing of its projects.
