The 29th National Annual Convention of the Lajna Imaillah of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women Association has ended in Accra. Delegates bemoaned the misconception that Islam is discriminatory against women. About 5,000 women across the country attended the two-day convention which coincided with 100 years of Ahmadiyyas spiritual leadership, “Khalafa” meaning succession.
The convention was under the theme “Future Leaders, the role of Muslim Women”. The first Deputy Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Mission, Alhaji Mohammed Yusif Yawson, said Muslims believe that men and women were created equally but the different roles the Qur’an assigns them have often been misconstrued as discrimination.
He explained that Islam accord dignity and honour to women. Alhaji Yawson noted that Western Culture often encourages indecent dressing but this is inconsistent with the beliefs of Islam. The President of the Association, Hajia Rahmat Muslim charged her colleagues to abide by all regulations of the Ahmadiyya Mission and maintain it as a peaceful one.
