A field day has been organized for some small holder crop farmers at a maize demonstration farm at Ejura in the Ashanti region. The event was to introduce the beneficiary farmers to improved farming technologies and agro-inputs to enable them to modernize their farming practices. The programme was jointly organized by the Ejura-Sekyedumase District of Agriculture and the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs of the West African Seed Alliance, an international NGO.
The NGO is dedicated to empowering subsistent farmers with modern farming technological know-how, while strengthening the linkage among members of the farming chain for improved food production. The field day was preceded by a durbar of the farmers, some agro- input dealers and research scientists who took the farmers through the correct application of agro-chemicals as well as the need for them to adopt new and improved crop varieties.
The Deputy District Director of Agriculture, Obrian Nyarko, stressed that for Ghana to experience a real boost in agriculture production, there is the need for key players in the production chain including input dealers, financial institutions, researchers, extension agents and farmers to appreciate eachother’s contribution.
Mr. Nyarko urged the farmers to implement new and improved farming technologies and high yielding crop varieties. He, however, cautioned them against indiscriminate disposal of agro- chemical containers after use. He also urged the farmers to apply the chemicals according to their specification to avoid food poisoning.
