The Deputy Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations, Kofi Osei Ameyaw has appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, identified as slave route, to integrate the celebration of Emancipation in their annual Calendar. This, he said, will help educate the citizens about the evils of slavery and the need for peace and unity.
Mr. Osei Ameyaw said this at the annual Emancipation Day Celebration at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region. The celebration was to create awareness about the evil nature of slavery of all forms in the country. The Deputy Minister, who is also the MP for Asuogyaman, mentioned that about 40 forts, castles and lodges which were used for the slave trade have been designated by UNESCO as World Heritage sites.
Mr. Osei Ameyaw observed that the celebration of the Emancipation Day will bring to the attention of Ghanaians the need to unite as one people with a common destiny in respect, dignity, peace, wealth and success. The Akradehene, Nana Okrukata said though slave trade was abolished some decades ago, there seems to be other forms of slavery emerging.
This includes poverty, diseases, oppression, human rights abuses and child labour. He asked that all hands should be on deck to find solutions to these emerging forms of slavery.
