The Ghana Investment Fund for Telecommunications, GILTEL is pursuing the extension of telecommunication services to underserved areas to be used by all telecom operators. So far, 21 of such facilities have been completed across the country and have the capacity to provide connectivity access to nearly 315 rural communities.
25 more sites are under construction at various locations in the country. The Minister of Communications, Dr. Ben Aggrey Ntim, who disclosed this in Kumasi, urged the various telecom companies to co-locate on the masts provided for connectivity to reduce overhead costs in the setting up of masts for individual usage.
He said his Ministry is also developing Community Information Centers in all constituencies to facilitate rural communities access to ICT and more than 90 such centers have been completed for use. Dr. Aggrey Ntim said this policy initiative will also help local government authorities with ICT access points to deliver services to the communities.
He explained that under Ghana’s ICT Strategy, Ministries, Departments and Agencies are being strengthened to offer informational and transactional services on the internet to both public and private sectors in an efficient manner.
