The Greek Orthodox Church in Ghana is constructing a medical centre at Tema Newtown to boost health care delivery in the area. The project estimated at thousands of Ghana cedis is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This came to light when the Pope and Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Theodoros consecrated the St. Nicholas Chapel of theGReek Orthodox Church at Tema Newtown.
The Chapel which was constructed by the Greek Consul General to Ghana and President of the Tsakos Group of Companies, Captain Nicholas Tsakos will be used as a worship centre for seafarers of commercial vessels which call at the Tema Port. It will also serve local Christian Orthodox members. The Pope commended Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku for helping the church to acquire the land for the building. He urged Ghanaians to maintain the peace the country is enjoying and ensure that they allow democracy to flourish.
Captain Tsakos said the church also plans to finance the construction of a community hall, and support students through scholarship packages to enhance education in Tema Newtown. The Greek Orthodox Church which was established in Ghana 25 years ago has branches throughout the country. Present at the ceremony were the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku, and vice presidental candidate mate of the NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
