The Emeritus Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Peter Akwesi Sarpong, has expressed disgust at the way some good Ghanaian values are giving way to ethnocentrism, tribalism and xenophobic practice. He noted that while there are clear rules as to how traditional rulers should be elected, the introduction of party politics into the system has brought about intolerance, deceit and intimidation into the institution. The Most Rev. Sarpong expressed these sentiments at a lecture organized by the St. Paul’s Catholic Seminary at Sowutuom in Accra as part of activities marking its 20th anniversary.
He said this situation accounts for the numerous chieftaincy disputes and litigation wrecking the Ghanaian society. Most Rev. Sarpong said for this reason, a seminarian must be trained in a way to eschew all forms of materialism. The Emeritus Archbishop condemned the way some Priests have become money minded saying this could cause them their Pastoral blessings. Speaking on the topic “Educational Reforms in Ghana and Their Influence on Seminary Formation”, the Bishop of Sunyani Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi, said educational reforms are relevant to meet the needs of the people towards development. He said the teaching of religious and moral education which has been downplayed at secondary schools means that seminary formation needs to step up the teaching of such subjects at the Senior Seminary.
