The President John Agyekum Kufuor today presented buses valued at about one million and 50 thousand new Ghana cedis (GH¢1,050.000) to 12 technical institutions from the four regions of the southern Ghana at a ceremony in Cape Coast. The beneficiaries are Anlo Technical, Comboni Technical Vocation, Have Technical and Kpandu Technical Institutes in the Volta Region. Others are Sacred Heart, Accra Technical Training, Ada Technical and Tema Technical Institutes in the Greater Accra Region. The rest are Cape Coast Technical and Asuansi Technical Institutes in the Central Region and Kikam and Takoradi Technical Institutes in the Western Region.
In his address, President Kufuor announced government plans to build technical and vocational education training centres in all regions of the country in order to cater for those unable to enter the Senior High School. That apart, he said, 15 out of the 38 Teacher Training Colleges are to specialize in the teaching of science, Vocational and Technical Skills in order to impart such ideas to students to help meet global challenges in science and technology. President Kufuor underscored the importance of science and technology in national development and stressed the need to give it attention.
He advised the authorities not to misuse the vehicles but rather take proper care of them to enhance their longer lifespan. The Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Prof Dominic Fobih, said the Presentation of the vehicles is a clear manifestation of government commitment to seeing to the transformation of technical and vocational educational training.
He said the ministry will institute the necessary measures to ensure that the vehicles are well maintained. The Central Regional Director of Education, Rosemond Blay noted transportation is one of the essential things in the modern day of life and hoped that the new vehicles would provide mobility and ensure smooth running of the institutions.
The Principal of Cape Coast Technical Institute, Kojo Lyall, on behalf of the recipients, thanked government and promised to utilize them to the best advantage of the students in their learning and training for the technological advancement of Ghana.
