Syria: ‘Suicide attack’ on Damascus security building
Syrian state TV is reporting a suicide attack against a building housing security forces in Damascus, as fighting continues to rage in the Syrian capital.

The regime’s opponents say the army has been using helicopters and tanks to bombard rebel districts.

The foreign-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims more than 60 government soldiers were killed over 48 hours.

Outside the capital, explosions have been heard in at least one town. Further afield, areas around Homs are said to have been bombarded, with clashes reported in Aleppo.

The regime’s supporters claim the rebels will be crushed.

“I think the situation in Damascus is largely under the control of the government forces who will eliminate the rebels in the troublespots where there have been clashes,” said Adnan Abed, chief editor of the official Al Baath Newspaper.

It is hard to verify either side’s claims. The rebels say they captured several tanks in Homs province.

The regime is fighting back against the rebels’ Operation Damascus Volcano, launched to try to seize control of the Syrian capital.

With diplomatic efforts floundering, there seems little hope of an end to the violence.
