Ghana's Retail Trade: Call to enforce GIPC Act
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, Joseph Paddy, says though some Ghanaians are of the view that the GIPC Act is obsolete, it still needs to be enforced before a new one is enacted.

Mr. Joseph Paddy said this on Radio Ghana's Current Affairs Programme "FOCUS", which discussed foreigners in Ghana's retail trade and related matters.

He is of the view that the law protects Ghanaians in retail businesses in Ghana. He emphasised that the exercise is not an attempt to ask non-Ghanaian traders to leave the country.

Also on the programme was the Director, Domestic Trade and Distribution of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ntim Atuahene. Mr. Atuahene explained what the law says regarding domestic trading by foreigners in the country.

Mr. Atuahene said the law regulating foreign traders in Ghana, existed before the ECOWAS treaty.

He said it was high time ECOWAS reviewed its code to accommodate certain conditions to make trading flexible for citizens in the sub-region.

Those were the views of panelists on Radio Ghana's Current Affairs Programme, "Focus"' which looked at foreign traders in Ghana's retail business.
