Ghanaians commemorated the 52nd anniversary of their Republic status yesterday. It is the day when the British Monarch ceased to be the Head of State of Ghana. The Daily Graphic thinks the observance of the day should go beyond merry-making. It says when Dr. Kwame Nkrumah the then Prime Minister weaned Ghana off Great Britain; it was to prove to the rest of the world that the black man is capable of managing his own affairs. According to the paper the country's fore- bears demonstrated and bequeathed the ideals and values of self-reliance, hard work selflessness and excellence. It is for this reason that their efforts and contributions are always recognised on July 1. The Graphic says as a Republican State, it is imperative that the country sustains its democratic tenets and has a duty and responsibility to build and entrench the values of an Independent Ghana.
