Vice President John Dramani Mahama is in Brasilia, Brazil to attend the UNDP organized Fifth Ministerial Forum for Development.

The Forum will focus on the need to aggressively tackle social inequalities, which have been identified as the key challenge for many societies despite ongoing strategies to overcome poverty.

Mr. Mahama was invited by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to lead a discussion on a case study of Ghana’s poverty reduction and social policies.

This is informed by what the UNDP says is the need to emphasise “ideas that inspire social policies, the type of social policies needed in the face of inequality and the linkage with economic and labour policies”.

The Vice President’s presentation will draw from President John Atta Mills’ ongoing strategies to tackle the inequality between the North and South of Ghana through the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), how weak institutional structure of education and health service delivery systems are being managed and also the focus on expanding the fiscal space among others.

The Forum, which opens on May 29 will end on May 31, 2012.

While in Brazil, the Vice President will also hold a number of meetings with officials of the Brazilian
government and business leaders.
