HRAC outlines recommendations for forced evictions

The Human Rights Advocacy Centre, HRAC, has released a number of recommendations to immediately help solve the issue of unannounced demolitions and forced evictions in the Greater Accra Region and the Country as a whole.

At a media briefing in Accra to present a report on a research undertaken by the centre between January 26 and 28 this year, on unannounced demolitions and forced evictions at the Odorna railway settlement, Dome market and Awudome Estates, the Programmes Manager of HRAC, Daniel Asare Korang, said the displaced residents were left to their fate.

A situation he described as detrimental to the socio-economic development of the Country.

Mr. Korang mentioned that although the settlers resided at unauthorized places, the authorities should have followed the right procedures for demolitions and evictions.

The President of Amnesty International Ghana, Lawrence Amesu, said the right of the citizen must be respected accordingly. Mr. Amesu asked the government to develop a more realistic plan to arrest the situation.
