Ghana marks 55th Independence Anniversary today
Today is exactly 55 years since Ghana attained independence from British colonial rule.

Ghana, spearheaded by Dr Kwame Nkrumah became the first sub-saharan nation to free itself from the shackles of colonialism.

Over the last 54 years, this historic event has been marked with various themes to reflect the direction of the country.

This year's independence focuses on "Sustaining Unity and Peace for Democracy and Development".

The day will as usual be marked all over the country with parades of security agencies, school children, workers and other groups.

The National parade will be held at the independence square in Accra.
