Syrian rebels retreat from Aleppo stronghold
Syrian rebels are reported to have abandoned their positions in the Salaheddine district of Aleppo, the country’s commercial hub.

Journalists from the Reuters news agency say several checkpoints manned by rebel fighters in the district have disappeared.

The area has seen intense fighting over the past few weeks as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad pledge to retake the whole city.

In Al-Sahharah, around 25 kilometres from Aleppo, locals say government troops swept into town shelling buildings.

While many residents have fled the violence, one man has decided to stay despite a shortage of food and other supplies.

“The shelling is continuous. More than 60 rockets per day. So many people died. Some lost their legs, hands, even their heads,” he said.

Fighting continues unabated in the rest of the country. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says more that 240 people were killed on Tuesday.

Wherever there is violence, the residents who stay behind have to scramble for basic supplies like bread. In many areas, only one bakery remains open.
