The Ghanaian Times comments on preparations being made towards next months presidential and parliamentary elections. The paper commends the Institute of Economic Affairs for organising debates for the contestants to enable electorates to make informal choices come December 7. As the day draws near, the Times urges the National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE to intensify its education of the political parties and their followers to refrain from politics of insults and character assassination. The paper notes that Ghanaians need peace not only to be alive but to create an enabling environment for increased investment.
The Daily Graphic commends the team of medical doctors who performed the first kidney transplant in the history of medical practice in Ghana . The paper considers the operation as a success as it will bring relief to the many people suffering from renal failure. The Graphic says the nation has already lost many of its skilled and unskilled manpower through kidney failure and asks patients to take advantage of the transplant though expensive the paper further urges all Ghanaians to contribute towards the kidney foundation in order save people in need of kidney transplant.
The Chronicle is appalled at the unnecessary tension being created in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region over the imposition of a parliamentary candidate by the NPP. The paper says it’s unfortunate Bekwai, which is known to be a peaceful town is chaotic because of an independent candidate’s ambitions. The Chronicle calls on the youth to use their thumb to reject him and stop the unnecessary threats and change for the better.
The Statesman congratulates President Kufuor and the government for building the Presidential Palace for the use of future Presidents. The paper is unhappy about the naming of the complex as Golden Jubilee House because it is unimaginative and has no identity. The Statesman suggest the name be Black Star House to signify the revival of Hope of Black African to put premium on the African identity and also make Ghana’s enviable accolade – the Black Star of Africa more indelible.
The Independent also congratulates President Kufuor for his vision of a Presidential Complex for the nation. The paper notes that history and posterity will forever recognize the foresight of the President in giving Ghana its Flagstaff back. The Independent however says the old historic name Flagstaff house should have been maintained.
