10 dead in accident at Mankrong

Ten people, made up of six males and four females, have been confirmed dead in an accident at Mankrong, near Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, this dawn.

The accident involved two Grand Bird buses with registration numbers, GS 83-16 and GN 6600-17.

Speaking to the media at the scene of the accident, the Eastern Regional Fire Officer, ACFO Samuel Mensah Sarpong, confirmed the dead saying they have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital Morgue.

He added that thirty-three people who sustained various degrees of injury are receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital and the Providence Medical Centre, also in Suhum.

ACFO Sarpong said one of the buses was heading towards Kumasi while the other was from Techiman to Accra. The cause of the accident is not known, but eye witnesses confirmed that one of the buses, in a bid to overtake a vehicle, collided with the on-coming bus from the other side of the road.
