TMA ranked best performing district in 2017 UNICEF District League Table
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly has been ranked the best performing district in this year's UNICEF District League Table 2017 while Krachi East in the Volta region was ranked the least.
On the Regional ranking, the Upper West region came first as the best performing region with the Eastern region at the bottom on the table.
This was made known at the presentation of the UNICEF District League Table 2017 in Accra.
The District League Table provides a multi-sectoral and integrated assessment of how Ghana is developing across its 216 Districts.
The programme which is in its fourth year provides Ghana with a holistic overview of the level of development across the country. It looks at areas in education, Sanitation, Rural Water provision, Health, Security and Governance.
This year's report revealed that some districts which did well last year, dropped this year from their positions while others have also made a remarkable improvement.
The LA Nkwantan-Madina municipality which ranked first last year this year dropped to second position, Awutu Senya dropped from fourth to firth position, Bibiani Anhwiaso Bewai district dropped from seventh to fifteenth this year.
While Tema Metropolitan Assembly moved from second position last year to first, the Atwima Nwabigya district moved from 37th position to third this year, and Nandom leapfrogged from 53th position to 7th position in this year's ranking.
Launching the District League Table 2017, the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kwasi Boateng Adjei, attributed the problem of districts to lack of toll collection hence their financial crisis.
Deputy Director of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) called on government to take a different look at how the district common fund is allocated to the districts.
The control of open defecation is deemed the cause by which the Upper West Region was ranked the best region.
