The Northern Region will miss its target of ending open defecation by 1st January 2018.

With barely two months to the deadline, less than fifty percent of communities in the Region have been certified Open Defecation Free, ODF.

At a stakeholder’s forum in Tamale, participants conceded that it is impossible to achieve ODF within the next two months.

The Chief Director at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Alhassan Issahaku, however says the target has given MMDAs in the Region the momentum to achieve the ODF status ahead of the rest of the country.

He identified poor information sharing among MMDAs and other stakeholders as a major setback in addressing the poor sanitation situation in the region.

Mr. Issahaku therefore called for increased collaboration among stakeholders especially on best practices, to help push the ODF agenda forward.

The forum afforded participants the opportunity to share the findings of a research conducted in three districts of the region, Zabzugu, East Gonja and Mion.
